A press check is the ultimate final proof. It's plates on the rollers, ink in the fountain "last chance dance" to making sure your project looks exactly as planned. Although there is an additional charge for the luxury of proofing work that is on press, it gives the client the ultimate say-so when it comes to refining the subtle variables of the printing experience. While it's impossible touch upon every aspect of printing, we have compiled a comprehensive list of points to help you achieve the look you desire. Check the paperstock, making sure it's the stock your ordered. Check the type. Make sure no type is missing or broken. Review images for color. Make sure tones are even, that all images are balanced in color quality. Note that there may be a color shift due to paperstock's quality (i.e. color or holdout). Often these factors affect dot gain resulting in a darker image. Compare images against its color proof (Matchprint). Remember, this is not the time for any significant color changes! These should have been taken care of during the Matchprint phase. Check any crossovers, making sure same color elements are consistent in quality and density. Once you are satisfied with color and registration, check the press sheet for hickeys or spots or holes. Often, dust or powder on the blanket produces minor open spots on the sheet. Finally, fold down and/or cut out the live area, double checking that live area elements appear as planned.
